Marcus Leyton

Senior Academic Advisor
Biography

Marcus is a Senior Academic Advisor with the College of Liberal Arts & Sciences. He currently works with students in the Cinematic Arts and Theatre Arts departments.

Marcus holds a bachelor’s degree from the University of Wisconsin - Superior and master’s degree from The University of Iowa, both in Communications, and has been at The University of Iowa since 2019. Marcus first worked in the Department of Communication Studies as a graduate student and teaching assistant before trading graduate research for academic advising as he discovered his passion for helping students through his work in teaching. His academic work has been presented internationally through the Society of Cinema and Media Studies, and the International Communications Association.

In addition to his work as an advisor, Marcus also leads the Cinematic Arts student ambassador program and in Fall 2026 is an instructor in the College Transition Program for incoming freshman at the university. He also volunteers his time on the North Central Region steering committee as Communications Chair for NACADA (Region 6), the largest professional organization for academic advisors in the world.

Before arriving in Iowa City, Marcus had an award-winning tenure as a journalist having interned for Wisconsin Public Radio, and working in local news in North Dakota, Idaho and Minnesota. He holds professional awards from the Midwest Broadcast Journalism Association and North Dakota Newspaper Association.

In his spare time, you can find Marcus spending time with family, writing (with his collection of fountain pens!), and exploring local history and nature.
