Department of Cinematic Arts Assistant Professor Hayley O'Malley is co-organizing a screening series and multi-day symposium on Black women's filmmaking for the Sojourner Truth Festival of the Arts at the University of Chicago taking place March 2-4.

The festival pays tribute to the very first Black women's film festival of 1976 which "showed new work by Black women filmmakers while also showcasing essential discussions about the art's future" writes Arionne Nettles of the Chicago Reader.

Nettles also writes that while researching the original festival, O'Malley "found a program from 1976 in special collections at Northwestern University." From there, she "connected with co-organizers, and together they created the idea for a way to honor that festival with new programming."

Screenings will include films such as Pearl Bowser's The Guest and will be followed by immersive discussion.

You can read more of Nettles' story here, and more about the festival on the University of Chicago's website
