Biography

Humberto Gonzales Bustillo was born in Maracaibo, Venezuela, in 1992. He earned a degree in Journalism and began his career as a film critic. In 2016, he was selected to participate in Talents Buenos Aires, organized by the Berlinale, and subsequently began writing for various film outlets across Latin America. He moved from Maracaibo to Buenos Aires and studied in the Cinema Program at Torcuato Di Tella University in Argentina. After finishing his first short film in 2021, he co-founded the production collective El Fantasma, where he's in constant collaboration with other fellow Venezuelan filmmakers. In 2024, he was selected to participate in the Open Doors section as a director at the Locarno Film Festival.

His work explores the intersection of personal memory and political history, often focusing on displacement, exile, and the Venezuelan diaspora. As a filmmaker, he has written and directed four short films: Aforismos del Lago (2021), Vísperas de la Memoria (2022), Fatherspy (2023), and Los Conjurados (2025). These films have been shown at festivals such as Locarno, Mar del Plata, Edinburgh, and Sheffield.
